California's Catalina Island Offers a Calming Retreat
Visit Catalina Island to find a tranquil refuge that will
have you feeling calm in no time when life's worries and strains become too
much for you. Although the island is only 22 physical miles from the mainland,
it seems like a lifetime apart in terms of lifestyle and people. There is
virtually little traffic noise on the island since there are only two ports one
into the major town of Avalon and the other onto the island's more remote side
at Two Harbors and only two methods to enter the island: by boat or helicopter.
On the island, there are very few automobiles, therefore most visitors either
travel by foot or bicycle.
When you first arrive on Catalina Island, you should visit
the local Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, which will give you all
the information you need about what's on, where to find it, and of course ideas
of where to stay and eat if you haven't already made reservations. Despite
being such a small island, there are things
to do here on the days when you
feel like doing something a little more energetic than watching the sun move
around. However, during the busiest times, you should always make a lodging
reservation before traveling to the island. Although it is possible to come and
find a room available, it is unlikely during high season due to the restricted
supply of lodging. The Catalina Island Museum, which traces the island's history
through its various phases from more recent times through the Hollywood era
(the island was one of the first major Hollywood film sets), all the way back
to Native Americans, is one of the island's two most well-liked tourist
destinations. The Wrigley Botanical Gardens, which will enthrall anybody with
an interest in flora and animals, are just approximately two miles outside of
Avalon. The island was originally owned by William Wrigley (of the chewing gum
dynasty), and you could even stay in his home, which has been transformed into
a bed & breakfast. When compared to the attractions in Los Angeles and San
Francisco, Catalina Island may not sound all that fascinating, but for anybody
looking to get away from the rush and bustle of city life, it's the ideal beach
getaway.
